Plastic Bottles a Health Risk?

The plastic water bottle has become a part of everyday life. It is used for storing drinking water which we drink the whole day. But do these bottles have just water in them? For some time now there have been reports that Plastic bottles are posing health risks. The recent increase in disease like diabetes, asthma and cancer have been attributed to increasing pollution levels in air, food and water. Is plastic contributing to the toxic elements in our body?Copper

One of the major issues in use of plastic bottles is the lack of information about the kind of plastic being used. Most of the bottles that are used for packaging drinking water are using one time usable plastic and there lies the health risk. If these bottles are reused they tend to leech harmful chemicals in the water we drink.

The refillable plastic bottles commonly known as PET bottles are made of polycarbonate. Even these break down over a period of time releasing Bisphenol a chemical which cause many disorders. Heat can causes the breakdown and so can over use. Bisphenol is a chemical that acts like the female hormone estrogen, which is harmful if it increases.

Estrogen has been linked to many diseases like infertility, diabetes and even cancer. This has been proven by clinical trials on animals. Plastic known as food grade is either polyethylene or polypropylene and can cause these health problems.

The solution to this problem is to use glass or metal bottles. Glass bottles are fragile and difficult to carry, so metal bottles for carrying water seems the feasible option. However, storing water in metals has its own issues. Aluminum bottles can react with water to form Aluminum oxide which is also harmful. Steel bottles are safe to carry water, but bacteria can grow in steel very easily. So which metal water bottle to use?

The answer is copper water bottles. Copper has the unique property of dissolving in water slowly and increasing the pH level of water which kills most of the germs. The dissolved copper is also a trace element required for proper functioning of the body. So, copper water bottles can be the healthy choice for storing and drinking water and it looks chic too.
